THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL CINEFANTASTIQUE ART |
Updated: October 16, 2021
Original Vincent Di Fate cover artwork featuring Gort and Klaatu from The Day the Earth
Stood Still for Cinefantastique (Volume 4, Number 5). This cover became the "signature"
cover for CFQ, and a line art version of the Gort image appeared on everything from CFQ
T-shirts to mugs.
Vincent Di Fate provided only four covers to Cinefantastique, and three of these are
offered in this auction. Deemed by People Magazine "One of the top illustrators of
science fiction," Di Fate has provided paintings not only for numerous book and magazine
covers but also for IBM, Reader's Digest, The National Geographic Society and NASA. He is
a recipient of the Hugo Award, The Frank R. Paul Award, The Chesley Award, and the Lensman
Award. His work is featured in the collections of the National Air and Space Museum, the
U.S. Air Force Art Museum, NASA, the New Britain Museum of American Art, and more. An
historian of the field (as his award-winning Infinite Worlds attests), he also teaches
courses on the history of science-fiction and fantasy art. Di Fate has also served two
terms as the president of the Society of Illustrators.
This wonderful image, featuring the characters from one of the films that has come to
define the science-fiction genre, is accomplished in acrylic on board and measures
11 in. x 14 1/2 in.
Value: $6,000 - $8,000
