INNOVATION ORIGINAL COMIC BOOK ART (ANNUAL #01)

Updated: April 10, 2022

A series of original color grayline pages from Lost In Space Annual #1, Which was published by Innovation in 1992. It was hand-painted by Disney colorist Scott Rockwell; the art was rendered by Michal Dutkiewicz & Barb Kaalberg. Written by Miguel Ferrer & Bill Mumy.

Graylines were a color method mainly used in the 1980's and 1990's, but they've become all but extinct with the proliferation of computer color. A grayline page actually consists of 2 separate pages there is a "black plate," which is all of the black lines (including the lettering) on a transparent overlay; the other page is a special photo paper on which the lines are printed in gray.

This page is the one that was then colored by hand. This method allowed colorists to get far more creative than was previously possible, since sections of the grayline page could be cut out, and airbrush color done on a separate paper could be pasted to the back of the page, making airbrush effects possible in a very small area something that was practically impossible to do with any other coloring method (before computer color came along, that is!).

Grayline coloring pretty much came to an end almost ten years ago this is one comic book coloring method that has already become a lost art and they graylines themselves are extremely rare!

Value: $200-Up. (Each)

(*) Update received this e-mail and photos on 4-10-5.

Sorry it took me so long to get these scans to you I'd hoped to have them to you a couple of weeks ago, but darned if life doesn't keep getting in the way! I have a feeling you know exactly what I mean! Attached are 8 scans from the next issue I'll be sending to you, the Lost in Space Annual #1, which was written by Bill Mumy (based on a story by Miguel Ferrer); it was titled "Two Thousand Light Years From Home." It was illustrated by Michal Dutkiewicz and Barb Kaalberg; I thought the fans of your website might be more interested in this particular issue, because of Michal's work on the new LIS graphic novel lots of familiar names working on this issue!

Anyway, as soon as I get the pages signed, this issue will be ready to send out to you (there are 8 pages scanned, but it's 23 pages altogether)

Best,

Scott Rockwell
