SPACE FAMILY ROBINSON ORIGINAL COVER ART (ISSUE #50) |
Updated: April 23, 2022
A pulp style, fully rendered cover painting to Space Family Robinson Lost in Space comics! The master behind most of Gold Key
comic success in the 1960 and 70's was pulp artist George Wilson. In recent years, artwork from such series as Space Family
Robinson Lost in Space, Magnus, Robot Fighter and Dr. Solar have become extremely sought after and prices have skyrocketed.
Even more rare are the highly desirable cover paintings by George Wilson.
For those who don't know, The Gold Key Space Family Robinson series pre-dated the Irwin Allen television series, Lost in Space featuring another Space Family Robinson. After some legal leg wrestling, a compromise was reached and The comic series took on
the lead title, Lost in Space over its original Space Family Robinson after a licensing agreement.
This artwork is very reminiscent of earlier period pulp and men's adventure magazines by such luminaries as Basil Gogos and
Norman Saunders. It's a large piece, and has been neatly framed in a tubular space chrome frame with cloth mat and fillet insert.
All acid free, the sight opening measures approx 9" x 13" in a 17" x 21" overall frame. Accomplished in qouache on illustration
board the art is in excellent condition.
The art comes with a great copy of the original published Gold Key comic with a later re-issue (and redrawn cover art from the orginal!) George Wilson cover art of this type is extremely rare.
Value: $1,500.
