AHI was a prolific toy company known for producing "rack toys" inexpensive items frequently sold in blister packs at retail chains like K-Mart during the 1970s. The toy itself was a plastic ray gun designed to fire plastic flying saucers ( Spinners ), and it was released in both blue and black plastic versions.

While the Lost in Space television series originally aired in the 1960s, this toy was part of a later wave of merchandise capitalizing on the enduring popularity of the science fiction franchise. It is distinct from the earlier 1966 Lost in Space toys manufactured by Remco, which was later acquired by AHI. Today, these AHI-branded items are considered quite difficult for collectors to find in good condition.
