THE DERELICT DIORAMA (BILL HEDGES) |
Updated: November 15, 2023
The Derelict was the first alien spaceship that the Robinsons met in their journey and had one of the stranger aliens. I loved the first view of the Derelict spaceship itself and how it drew the Jupiter-2 into it after they circled it. I based the interior of it
on blueprints that I had and the control console was designed and 3D printed by Jeff Wargo. The Jupiter-2 was on stage 11 and that
full size mock up later had it's legs removed and was shown as a crash site Jupiter-2 for the episode Island in the Sky before they modified the Gemini spaceship that was used ever after. I had some old Lunar Models resin Robinsons that I used and the Moebius
Jupiter-2 so the diorama is rather large. They used the brain tendrils from the movie Fantastic Voyage to create the the interior structure. My tendrils aren't as lacy as the ones on the show, but I wanted to make them free standing rather than hanging from a ceiling. The three women weren't seen standing on the landing leg like that on the show, but there's an iconic publicity photo of
them posed like that, that was probably taken at the time of filming. I guessed at the color of the bubble creature. One of them
can later be seen in the episode Prisoners of Space and was darker, but I wanted this one to blend in more with the bubbles
surrounding him. Next week, an army of tiny mechanical monsters is preparing to invade their lonely planet.
