The series shifted dramatically in tone during its three year run. Season 1 ( Black and White ) Consists of 29 episodes focused heavily on hard survival, sci-fi adventure, and alien exploration. Seasons 2 & 3 ( Full Color ) To compete with ABC's phenomenally popular, campy Batman TV series, Lost in Space transitioned into a colorful, whimsical science fantasy show. The plotlines moved away from the full ensemble cast to focus primarily on the comedic dynamics between Dr. Smith, Will, and the Robot.
