Original human collar and leash props as seen used in the classic Sci-Fi film Planet of the Apes ( 20th Century Fox, 1968 ), which follows a group of astronauts who crash-land on a mysterious planet on which apes are the dominant species bent on exterminating the human race.

This leash and collar are composed of a hand-tooled brown leather. Apes in the film would use this type of leash and collar to control their human captives. Planet of the Apes, with its shocking twist ending, was an enormous box office hit upon release and inspired numerous sequels, a Tim Burton-directed remake in 2001 and a rebooted franchise that launched in 2011. In 2001, the original Planet of the Apes was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant."
