PLANET OF THE APES OPENING CREDITS

Updated: March 12, 2025

I thought since I posted the title screen for the tv series, I'd do the same for the films. One thing I noticed though. In "Planet of the Apes," Charlton Heston got his name above the title. Film buffs will know what that means, but I noticed in the subsequent films James Franciscus despite being the start of the film, never got his name above the title. Same for Roddy McDowall in "Escape, Conquest, and Battle" despite being the main star of each and having had a major film career behind him at that time. Still wondering why? Was Heston's above title credit to do with his Oscar win for "Ben Hur?" Roddy had many nominations and wins of other awards up to his "Apes" roles of Cornelius, Caesar, and Galen. I know he should have been nominated for "Escape and Conquest." Though we know how the Academy Awards feel about the Science Fiction genre. It wasn't really until Melinda Dillion getting a nomination for "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" in 1978 that genre was actually acknowledged. Roddy deserved something for his amazing performances for these films. Same with Kim Hunter. I guess no one asked me. Anyway, here are the title screens.
