1998-04-03 - RETURN TO EARTH CELEBRATION PARTY |
Updated: October 22, 2021
The dates were April 3-5, 1998 and the event was the "Space Family Robinson's
Return to Earth Celebration. This sci-fi collectibles extravaganza was held at
the Hollywood Entertainment Museum. The event was produced by Gary Sohmers,
Fred Sherman, & FoxStar Productions, Inc. April 3rd hosted a preview party with
several hundred stars in attendance. A very nice appetizer dinner was held at
the original "Cheers" bar.
This was also opening night for the New Lost in Space movie. The tickets were
sold out at all the Hollywood theaters in town, and the lines were long. This
reminded me of the days of Star Trek, Star Wars, and Jaws when they hit the
movie screens. April 4th was a signing session with the LIS cast. It was also
a great evening seeing Bill Mumy perform on stage with his rock band, "The
Jenerators".
April 5th brought many of us to the Roosevelt Hotel with breakfast with the great
one, Jonathan Harris. The good doctor was in great spirt, and brought the house
down with his memorable memories of the LIS TV show. The event also included
vendors, display of prototype Robots from, Icons. As well as original props from
Irwin Allen TV shows, Lost in Space, Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, and
costumes. The original B-9 Robot costume was on display, owned by producer
Kevin Burns. Prop costume collector, John Azarian was very kind in loaning some
of his costumes for display at the event. The original Jupiter-2 on launch site
was also on display owned by prop collector, Greg Jein. The vendors were small
for the turn-out do to a Star Trek & Star Wars convention also held on the same
weekend. But over all, it was a great weekend for "Lost in Space" and for the
fans that attended the special event.
