The series is set in the 23rd century and follows the crew of the USS Enterprise ( NCC-1701 ) as they embark on a five-year mission to explore strange new worlds, seek out new life and civilizations, and boldly go where no man has gone before. Despite its initial low ratings and cancellation after three seasons ( 79 episodes ), "Star Trek" gained immense popularity through syndication in the 1970s, achieving cult status.
