SUPERMAN ORIGINAL COSTUME (GEORGE REEVES)

Updated: June 22, 2023

Iconic and Rare George Reeves "Superman" Tunic and Padded Muscle Torso from Adventures of Superman ( Warner Bros., 1952-1958 ). George Reeves was the first actor to portray Superman on the small screen, becoming a staple in American households in the 1950s, and forever etched into the minds of Baby Boomers. This incredibly rare, vintage original, remarkable ( 2 ) piece "Superman" costume consists of a slate blue knit wool, long sleeve bodysuit with yellow and red wool felt "S" applique patch affixed to chest. Mr. Reeves was known to remove the chest logo emblem from his uniforms at the end of each season and send them to sick children who wrote him. This tunic was acquired from Western Costume Co. with no chest logo, and when a chest logo patch original to the 1950s television production surfaced nearly fifteen years later, it was reattached by museum conservators to the woolen tunic in 2006. The body suit / tunic retains the internal Western Costume Co. label typed, "George Reeves". The tunic exhibits perspiration stains, some light rubbing to the armpits and a few tiny holes. The "S" shield exhibits some light surface scuffs, areas of slight discoloration, and minor restoration. The tunic is accompanied by a muscular under-suit constructed of a fabric base layer with sculpted rubber torso, suggesting muscular pectoral, abdominal and bicep muscles, stretch fabric sleeves, and integral satin briefs with dance strap. Heavy duty zipper rear closure. The muscle torso exhibits some surface cracks and discoloration, but remains in good to very good vintage condition overall. Muscle torso acquired directly from the show's special effects and flying supervisor, Thol "Si" Simonson.

Value: $200,000-Up.
