Fred Gwynne is best known as the amiable Herman Munster in the television series The Munsters ( 1964 - 1966 ). But the long-faced, deep-voiced actor's career spanned more than forty years. On Broadway he starred in works by Shakespeare, Ionesco, Tennessee
Williams, and Thornton Wilder, mean while playing character parts in film and television. In addition, he graduated Harvard, served
in the navy, worked as an advertising copywriter and artist, wrote or illustrated more than a dozen children's books, and was a
long-time weekend farmer. Still, the monster success of his six-foot, ten-inch ( in platforms ) Herman Munster overshadowed all other accomplishments.
