Actor - Whit Bissell:
Born October 25, 1909
Died March 5, 1996
Whit Bissell was an alumnus of the Carolina Playmakers, the prestigious
amateur-theatrical arm of the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. He
entered films with "Holy Matrimony (1943)", instantly establishing his
standard screen characterization of fussy officiousness. Twice as busy on
TV as he was in theatrical films, Bissell was starred as Woodrow Wilson on
an episode of the "Profiles in Courage (1964)" anthology and was
co-starred on the futuristic adventure series "The Time Tunnel (1966)".
Lovers of low-budget 1950s horror films have a special place in their
hearts for Whit Bissell's brace of "mad scientist" portrayals in "I Was a
Teenage Werewolf (1957)" and "I Was a Teenage Frankenstein (1957)"; it was
in the latter film that the admirably straight-faced Bissell uttered the
immortal line: "Answer me! I know you have a civil tongue in your mouth -
I sewed it there myself!" For his contributions to science fiction films,
Bissell received a life career award from the Academy of Science Fiction,
Fantasy & Horror Films in 1994. He served on the Screen Actors Guild board
of directors for nearly two decades.
Biography:
1960s TV fans will recognize Whit Bissell as Gen. Heywood
Kirk on TV's The Time Tunnel, and as Mr. Lurry in the Star
Trek episode The Trouble with Tribbles.
Born Whitner Bissell in New York City, Bissell came from a New
York prominent family. His father was an eminent surgeon and
his mother was a teacher of English and Latin, before her
marriage. One of five children that included three brothers
and a sister, Bissell was an avid yachtsman and fencer in his
younger days.
After attending the University of North Carolina at Chapel
Hill, Bissell began his acting career on stage with the
Carolina Playmakers. He then headed to Broadway and into film.
On television, Bissell played druggist "Calvin Hanley" on
Peyton Place and was a frequent guest star on sci-fi shows
such as The Outer Limits, One Step Beyond, The Bionic Woman,
The Incredible Hulk, The Invaders, and Land of the Giants.
Bissell also played evil scientists in the horror films I Was
a Teenage Werewolf and I Was a Teenage Frankenstein. His other
films included Airport, Birdman of Alcatraz, and The Caine
Mutiny.
