Tentatively set for Saturday: Kevin Burns and Jon Jashni of Synthesis Entertainment will preview the new Lost In Space TV project (being co-helmed by John Woo and written byDoug Petrie) that will be a pilot for the WB. They may have some footage (not confirmed at this time) and some surprises to be announced.

They will also screen the never before seen pilot for revival of The Time Tunnel that was a potential series project for Fox TV.

Both works are based in part on the ground breaking Irwin Allen TV series of the sixties.

"Kevin Burns Talks About New Lost In Space"

Many fans of the original Irwin Allen series "Lost In Space," that aired on CBS in the late 1960s, remember there being two easy-on-the-eyes young ladies as part of the Robinson family. Now, there will be only one.

In a recent interview with the B-9 Robot Builders Club, producer Kevin Burns recently talked about some of the characters and story arcs for the upcoming series that recently received a pilot commitment from The WB. And those expecting the exact same thing they saw in the 1960s series, or even the box office bomb motion picture, will be disappointed.

"Penny Robinson is the biggest character change," Burns said. "She is to be an infant/toddler, totally dependent on the family for protection."

Wow ... an infant on a space mission? Of course, Burns said. That introduces the back story that gets the Robinsons in space to begin with, in order for them to get lost.

"Remember, they thought they were going to a safer place than Earth. They did not plan to get lost."

The new planned series is being developed by Doug Petrie, and the modified mission of the Jupiter-2 can be explained through the character of John Robinson, the father figure and, what Burns described as, the "Russell Crowe of 'Gladiator.'"

The character of John "has been through very tough times on an overpopulated and battle-weary Earth," Burns said. "He's motivated to get his family to a saner environment and plans to take them to a farming colony. He's not the 'sensitive type' like the character we saw in the LIS movie, and he has some trouble relating with his son's intellectual abilities."

Oh, yes, the son. Will Robinson. Will he be compared to Wesley Crusher of "Star Trek: The Next Generation?"

"William Robinson is still the 10-year-old boy genius, and will no doubt save the family from time to time with his cleverness," Burns said. In other words, "Yes."

Almost all of the other familiar names will be back. Maureen, the "tough but loving mom, getting the job done and not afraid to use a laser pistol to do it"; Major Don West, whose "eye will be on Judy"; and Judy, who "understands the reasons for leaving Earth with her family, but is perhaps the most reluctant to go."

One name that is missing is Dr. Smith, played in the original series by Jonathan Harris. However, Burns did hint that there is a possiblity that Dr. Smith could show up in later episodes.

And yes, we didn't forget Robot.

"Because they are going to an established colony, it doesn't make sense to bring a Robot," Burns said. "But don't worry, there will be a Robot, and it will be created by Will Robinson. And, like in the original series, as time passes, it will become more human and a part of the family. As far as how it looks, it will not be a duplicate of the original Robot, but it should have some familiar features. It definitely will not be another 'Big Blue' from the movie. I hope to see Dick Tufeld doing the voice of the Robot, if he is able."

Burns said that a one-hour pilot script is being written, and if it's approved, shooting for the pilot could begin as early as January, which could take place in Vancouver.

"The pilot should be ready for review by April with a final WB network decision probably coming in May," Burns said. "If it is picked up, then the first episodes should start with the Fall 2004 schedule.

"WB seems very excited about 'Lost In Space,' the head of the network made a personal plea for the series, and this excitement was one of the reasons we went with them over CBS."

WB wins 'Space' race
Net beats out 3 others for right to redo series

The WB has won the rights to the new "Lost in Space," shelling out more than $2 million for the red-hot family drama. At least three other webs made serious bids for the 20th Century Fox TV/Fox TV Studios project, which is being put together by scribe Doug Petrie ("Buffy the Vampire Slayer"), helmer John Woo and the Kevin Burns/Jon Jashni shingle Synthesis (Daily Variety, Sept. 24). Terence Chang and Suzanne Zizzi of Woo's Lion Rock Prods. are also on board as exec producers.

In the end, however, the WB's track record with both fantasy skeins and family-based hours -- along with a healthy pilot production commitment -- convinced the studios involved to set up "Lost" at the Frog.

"We think the WB is the perfect network to support a show like this," said 20th Century Fox TV prexy Gary Newman.

Along with its $2 million-plus pilot commitment, weblet had to rework its business template with 20th in order to make the deal, agreeing to both a premium license fee of roughly $1.2 million per episode and a provision that ensures the studio will, in success, eventually snag a full-cost license fee for the series. Frog plans to offer the arrangement to other studios, though only for top-tier projects with extraordinary auspices.

"We needed to create a deal that was advantageous to both ourselves and 20th Century Fox TV," said WB co-CEO Jordan Levin, who confirmed the new agreement but declined to discuss specifics.

Frog and 20th clashed three years ago over a renewal deal for "Buffy the Vampire Slayer." That history no doubt was one reason both sides wanted to make sure a solid financial framework was in place before they embarked on a costly new hourlong project.

'Rewarding' relationship

"With the exception of (the final season of) 'Buffy,' we've had a good and rewarding business relationship with 20th," Levin said. " 'Reba' has been the most recent example of shows that have been win-win for both sides."

Indeed, Levin confirmed the WB is going forward with a full season of 20th's "Angel," which has done well in its new timeslot this season. Net had an option to cut back to 13 episodes if it wanted to do so.

As for "Lost," Levin said the WB was the most logical home for the Endeavor-packaged project, which, like "Buffy," will explore a larger theme (the modern family) against a fantastic backdrop (outer space). Petrie will write and exec produce, with Woo attached to direct via his Lion Rock Prods.

Lead-in opportunities

What's more, "We had a relationship with Doug. He speaks our language as a writer," Levin said. "There are also compelling lead-ins we have available with 'Charmed' and 'Smallville.' And we've been a network that's proven the ability to program with both the family and fantasy genres and keep those shows on the air."

Petrie confirmed his vision for "Lost in Space" is for a show that's "not about hardware."

"It's not about laser blasters and starships and funky aliens, though there will be bags of all of those," Petrie said. "That stuff is just the best window dressing, the way monsters provided a way for 'Buffy' to say high school is hell. The show is going to be more based on what's going on with the typical American family rather than a sweeping space opera."

Newman said Petrie, Woo, Burns and Jashni have "come up with a great contemporary take on this property that makes it accessible and a great coming-of-age story."

Won't play doctor

New "Lost" won't feature a Dr. Smith character, though there will be a robot. Skein will be set in 2097.

Concurring with Newman, Burns said the WB "made a strong and convincing case that they knew best how to position and promote this property."

"Doug's vision for this show is so perfectly detailed and realized, it was important that we went to a network that really understood it," he added.

Synthesis, formed by Burns and Jashni to bring new life to the creations of Irwin Allen, last revived "Lost" at NBC as a telepic; that project went away following the death of original "Space"-man Jonathan Harris.

Pod squad

Fox TV Studios topper David Grant said the "Lost" deal is an example of how FTVS' pod strategy can work successfully.

"It's important to pay attention to these hallmark Irwin Allen properties," he said. Burns and Jashni are "experts on anything Irwin Allen. And the goal of Fox TV Studios is to provide a home for really talented people."

In addition to running Synthesis, Burns heads nonfiction production shingle Prometheus Entertainment, while Jashni is prexy of Ashok Amritraj's Hyde Park Entertainment.

For quite some time, Fox has been hinting at a forthcoming DVD release of Lost In Space. According to Fox information distributed to Press and Retailers alike, the street date officially (and very recently) listed for the first time is January 6th. TVShowsOnDVD e-tail partners Amazon, DVDEmpire, and DVDPlanet all agree with that date (at least at the time of this writing).

However, Fox's TV-On-DVD website for consumers started listing the Lost In Space - Season 1 set just in the past couple of days. Instead, it shows a release date of January 13th (use the "View All TV DVD Titles" option). This may reflect a brand-new delay of one week...or it may simply be incorrect (this consumer site has had several known errors on release dates in the past).

Throwing a big monkey wrench into the whole idea of a January '04 release at all, though, is this post at the Home Theater Forum by that site's owner, Ronald Epstein (who is on record as being a HUGE fan of the series, and just journeyed cross-country for the meeting he mentions):

Just came back from a meeting at TwentiethCentury Fox studios.

I explicitly asked about Lost In Space

No official date has been set for this release yet. I was told that it would be out sometime 2004, though.

I would highly doubt a January release. From the conversation I had with Fox, it seems that the production of the DVD set isn't nearly ready to go yet.

It could be that the folks at Fox that he was meeting with were simply being coy with him, not realizing that the sales and marketing departments had gone forward with an announcement for January. However, it's equally possible that the people Ron met with had new information that the others didn't. We're getting conflicting information here, and so the situation is confusing right now.

Complicating this matter is that the Fox Home Video general website seems to be taking feedback about fans' interests in which first-season episodes are their favorites. Survey-takers are rewarded with a code that allows them to get free shipping on orders they place at the studio's online Fox Store.

"Lost In Space" almost has returned to television.

Variety is reporting that Kevin Burns and Jon Jashni's Synthesis Entertainment is teaming up with film director John Woo and writer Doug Petrie on a brand new version of the 1960s science-fiction television show, not to return it to the big screen, but to bring it back to television sets at home.

The show will be produced by Regency and 20th Century Fox Television along with Lion Rock Productions.

Synthesis has been working on this project for some time, originally planning an NBC television movie. That project was dropped, however, following the death of Jonathan Harris, who played Dr. Smith in the original series.

No network has committed to the new series yet, but insiders have reported to Variety that there already is a lot of interest in the series. The series was made into a movie by New Line Cinema in the late 1990s, but bombed. Many blamed a confusing storyline for the failure.

Burns told Variety that the Jupiter Project will be set about 100 years in the future and will have a television family that people can relate to.

Network development execs seem anxious to get "Lost."  Kevin Burns and Jon Jashni's Synthesis Entertainment is teaming with helmer John Woo and scribe Doug Petrie on a new TV take of "Lost in Space" that's generating heated interest from several webs.

Regency and 20th Century Fox TV will produce the skein with Fox TV Studios-based Synthesis and Woo's Terence Chang-headed Lion Rock Prods.

Synthesis, a company formed by Burns and Jashni to bring new life to the creations of Irwin Allen, last revived "Lost" at NBC as a telepic; that project went away following the death of original "Space"-man Jonathan Harris.

Multiple webs have been pitched the project by packaging agency Endeavor, and network insiders said there's been strong response to the idea. New Line's recent feature take on "Lost" opened well but ultimately fizzled.

New take on "Lost in Space" will return the show to its roots as a family drama, which is what Allen intended when he penned the original pilot.

"This is a drama about a family that survives an incredible cataclysm," Burns said. " 'Lost in Space' became a different show because of Jonathan Harris and his talent. That was fabulous, but what Doug did was go back to the show Irwin intended to make. Will there be aliens and monsters and robots (in the new show)? Absolutely. But that's not what it's about."

Burns said the project will be set about 100 years in the future and will feature a relatable, contemporary family at its core.

The last Allen property to snag a pilot commitment was "Time Tunnel," which didn't go forward at Fox.

Synthesis is looking at reviving other Allen projects but plans to take its time with each concept.

"These are very important franchise properties," Burns said. "We see Irwin Allen as a viable brand, not unlike Gene Roddenberry or Rod Serling. There are a lot of considerations when we bring one of these ideas to market. For us, it's not just about being rights holders."

In addition to running Synthesis, Burns heads nonfiction production shingle Prometheus Entertainment, while Jashni is prexy of Ashok Amritraj's Hyde Park Entertainment.

Today marks a very special day in Lost in Space fandom!  My dear friends Jeanette Kelly & Dave Berry are getting married in Nigagra Falls at 3:00 Pm EST.  I received this special e-mail announcement at 11:00 Am this morning California time.

I am so proud and happy to finally see these two "LOVE-BIRDS" tie the knot here.  It hasn't been easy for the two of them the past several years either.  Dave just e-mailed me and they received a white wedding cake with the "Jupiter-2 with Landing Gear" on the cake.  I am promised to have photos of their wedding here, and they are even "Fed-Xing" me a piece of the cake.

All of us are very happy here for the two of you on your special day together.  May your marriage be filled with happiness, good health, and great memories together.

Wow!

Another big update here folks!  Our site now has 1,033 items in the collection inventory and over 11,665 photos/images.  Some really cool stuff was added on this update.  Under "Friends" check out "Ed Nardo" bio and awesome Jupiter-2 graphic art.  For the first time ever anywhere the first photos of the Japanese Chariot made by the Marusan Company in 1966.  These are photos of this rare vintage toy "unbuilt" mint in the box.  Many thanks to "Thomas Vaccina" of New York for this update.

Today, we celebrate actress "Angela Cartwright's" 51st birthday.  Best known for her role on Make Room for Daddy with Danny Thomas, and the young teenage girl "Penny Robinson" from the Fantasy TV-Show Lost in Space.  We all wish Angela a super b-day here, and may you have many more.

'Lost in Space' movie 'Major West', 'Friends' Star Matt LeBlanc is going from newlywed to new dad. LeBlanc, 36, and his wife, Melissa, are expecting a baby in mid-March, publicist Joe Libonati said Monday. The couple married in May. She has two children from a previous marriage. The baby would be LeBlanc's first.

I am very proud and excited to announce our new front page look here! Thanks to Larry Lee Moniz computer graphic artist, and our Web master Kirk Roderick.  The new fun logo includes my pal "Odie" in the center with all of Irwin Allen's ships around him. Kirk went a step further to add "links" to make getting to your favorite shows or subject matters quicker too.

Larry is currently working on some "flash" & "animation" for the logo as well.  This will be added to the site shortly.  Many thanks to both Larry & Kirk for making our site even better.

Tonight, we also hit 52,000 visits here.  This is amazing in just two years on the internet.  Thanks to all of you, "the fans" for making this the #1 website for Irwin Allen.  We are working on many exciting and new features for the site too.  One, will be a fun "Comic Strip Review" which will be in the hands of  Larry & I.  This will be a great addition to the site, and will have high lights soon.

I am pleased to announce that computer graphic artist, Larry Lee Moniz of Hayward California has joined our "Uncle Odie's " website as our new committee member.  I am very excited and proud to have Larry with us.  I have known Larry for about a year, and speak with him on the phone on a regular bases .  Larry is truly a Lost in Space fan, and his love and loyalty to the B-9 Robot is overwhelming.  Larry has supported our efforts here from the beginning on the "What I Collect" site to our new home here.

If you haven't notice we have a NEW title logo (Fantasy World) look on our main page.  Not to mention three cool new banners in our Lost in Space episode guide section.  Larry will bring  dramatic, and exciting look to our site. Larry has many talents, and you will see much of Larry's graphic art in the months ahead.

Website Hits 1000 Items!

History in the making after two years of posting and down-loading photos onto the "Uncle Odie's" Collectibles website. Yes! Today, August 5, 2003 we hit the magic number 1000 Irwin Allen collectibles on the www.uncleodiescollectibles.com website. The special item was the B-9 Robot Club emblem. We now have 1001 items and 11,327 photos.

We all ask the question here? "Is there anything left to post here?" You better belive it, because folks, I'm just getting started here. Just obtained some very rare photos on Billy Mumy & Jonathan Harris from Bill Williams of Australia. These photos were taken as promotional stills, and they were never used back in 1965. We keep looking everyday here, sometimes nothing for weeks, then., I hit the jackpot.

Kirk has also been doing more regular updates on the site when time permits him there. He is also working on scanning many of my rare photos from my collection. We hope to have many of these great images in the photo galleries in the next few weeks.

Many of you have ask for it, so here it is!  I tried posting messages and updates in the forum page with little response. So....we decided to post it here on the main page.  This section will include weekly news of interest, what's hot on eBay, and other items of interest when it comes available.

We have updated our main page with a cleaner look, and a new message for our 2nd Anniversary for August 1st 2003.  We have come a long way in just two years.  Thanks to all of you for making this happen.  We are currently working on cleaning up the text on all the items within the inventory of the site.  This will improve the quality on reading of the many items on the site. Please bare with us during this busy updating on the site.

First off would like to wish Mark Goddard a belated Happy Birthday here. This website service was down on Mark's special day on July 24, 2003. Our Jupiter-2 pilot Major Don West, hopefully had a super day with family and friends.

Today, July 26, 2003 actor Robert Colbert from the classic Time Tunnel series, & shot em' up country show Maverick, also eating cake and ice cream.

Mark is 64 and Robert is now 72. Both are very active in the business today, and attend many conventions delighting there many fans.

Happy Birthday to you both, and many more.
