About the Artist:
Sonia R. Hillios is an award-winning painter and illustrator of science fiction and fantasy and environmental subjects. Her
work has been commissioned by The Hamilton Collection, Pocket Books, DC Comics, Lucasfilm Ltd., Paramount Pictures, SkyBox International, Universal Studios, Twentieth Century Fox, and many others.
Sonia's work is the result of a lifelong interest in science fiction and in art. From an early age, she read the works of
such science fiction greats as Robert A. Heinlein and Andre Norton. Inspired by the work of renowned genre artists
Tim Hildebrandt and Michael Whelan, she also pursued drawing and painting as a hobby. As a young woman she began exhibiting
her paintings of scenes and characters from the Star Trek universe, at fan conventions, where they were always admired for
their skill and accuracy. In 1982 her work caught the eye of an editor at DC Comics, who commissioned a Star Trek cover. Since
then, Sonia has built a highly successful career as an illustrator and painter of cinematic subjects, including The Crow,
Cocoon, E.T., and Close Encounters of the Third Kind.
A self-taught artist, Sonia works in airbrush, acrylics, oils and mixed media, creating works rich in color and variety, and
full of the wonder and exhilaration of science fiction. Her lifelike portraits of well-known characters, especially from the
Star Trek universe, have won the admiration of both fans and the actors who portray these characters. Sonia is also known for
her close attention to detail in the imaginary universes she recreates. When she painted the Millenium Falcon for the Hamilton Collection Star Wars plate series, fans were captivated by the tiny images of Han Solo and Chewbacca visible through the cockpit windows.
Sonia maintains a busy schedule of commissioned paintings for posters, book covers, and other licensed collectibles. She also
takes time to answer letters from fans, and to visit several fan conventions every year, to greet her fans in person and to
showcase her work.
A native of Massachusetts, Sonia has her studio in her country home, which she shares with her husband Chris and her parrots,
Inca, Lucas, Poppy, and Jazz.
