On February 20, 2005 Larry Lee Moniz and I attended Wondercon at the Moscone
Center in San Francisco. This was my first visit to this annual event, and I
truly enjoyed every minute of it. This is a very great event held in the bay
area for years. Many stars come out for this event, famous comic book artist,
and not to mention some great rare comics to purchase too.
The highlight of this event for me personally was to meet the host of "Creature
Features" Bob Wilkins. For those of you that did not watch or get this show
in your area. Creature Features was a Saturday nite (9:00 Pm to 1:00 AM)
featuring 2 horror movies each week. The show also featured rare old-time movie
mini serials such as, "Buck Rogers", "Zomie of the Stratosphere" and others from the
1940's and 1950's. These were very low buget, shoot-them-up, fist fighting, and
come back next week cliff-hangers. These were very poplar in the movie houses,
and brought back the kids and teenagers.
The weekly movies shown on Creature Features where normally classic horror flicks
such as monsters, sci-fi, and real low budget films. Even Bob told his viewers to
either go to another channel, or call it a nite and go to bed. I mostly enjoyed
Bobs interviews, and even had several guest such as Leonard Nimoy, James Doohan,
George Takei, Buster Crabbe, Lon Chaney, Boris Karloff, and other famous people.
Bob really was involved in Star Trek, and was very supportive in early Star Trek
conventions.
Creature Features was taped from Oakland on channel 2. Bob was also the weatherman
for the network. Not to mention being Captain Cosmic character for a kids show in
the late afternoon. Bob was an idol for me as a kid, and I will always remember him
for his fun humor, jokes, and those terrible B-movies each week. I never missed this
show for nearly 15 years on the air. I fought with the entire family for the remote,
winning in the end. I look at it this way, they had plenty of sleep on Saturday night.
For me, I slept in on Sundays dreaming of Godzilla, Dracula, Vincent Price, and waiting
to listen to that cool opening/ending theme music from the show. Thanks to Bob Wilkins
and John Stanley (later host) for all the great memories.
It was nice to see Timmy (Jon Provost) from the classic Lassie TV series at the event. I
have met Jon several times, and always a delight to see and chat with. Jon shared memories
of the show, talked about June Lockhart, and fandom in general.
Also many thanks to Larry Lee Moniz for spending the day with me!
